Dr. Ami D. Acharya, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.O.G. received her medical degree from Bombay University, India, in January of 1997 and went on to start a Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Bombay, India, in August 1997. During her rotation at a primary health care center she realized the many problems that exist in health care systems and felt that her clinical training had not prepared her to address these issues adequately. Hence, she left India in June of 1998 to come to the United States.
Here, she earned a Masters degree in Public Health at Harvard University in Boston, MA in June of 1999 and completed a Clinical Research Fellowship at The Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. in 2001, actively participating in clinical and Public health research. She went on to complete a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Grand Rapids Medical Education & Research Center (MERC)/ Michigan State University in July 2005.
Her professional experience includes being medical director of a National Community Center of Excellence in Women’s health at Griffin Hospital in Derby, CT., from October 2005 to October 2006. Following this, she joined Asis Medical Associates, where she now practices obstetrics and gynecology with a keen interest in the management of pelvic organ prolapse and female incontinence, as well as advanced laparoscopy including robotic surgery.
Dr. Acharya has received a number of honors and awards, including: Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident Award in 2005, and an award for the highest grade in Forensic Medicine in the 1994 medical school examination. Her publications include a poster presentation at the Conjoint meeting of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine and the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society in October 2005.
Dr. Acharya is a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of the New Haven Obstetrical Society.
