Our History

The practice of Asis Medical Associates was established by our founder, Dr. Jose Asis. Dr. Jose Asis was born and raised in the small town of Conlara, Argentina. He attended the University of Cordoba where he was elected student president and engaged in social activism. He received his M.D. from the same institution in 1963. He came to the United States with his wife, Celeste, and their newborn daughter for residency training at the Hospital of St. Raphael.

Upon completion of his residency, he made the critical choice to remain in the U.S. He believed that it was in this New Haven community that he could best fulfill his role as a physician and lay the groundwork for a better life for his family.

He began private practice in 1969 and quickly gained the respect of his patients and peers. Guided by his passion to provide the best for his patients, he became one of the first laparoscopic surgeons, and the first to provide ultrasound services within his practice.

Meanwhile, he and his wife raised three children, and encouraged them to pursue their own passions. Each decided to pursue medicine. Dr. Maria Asis-Gilbride completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Cornell-New York Hospital in 1993 and joined her father in practice. Dr. Tony Asis joined the practice in 1997 after completing his residency at Yale New Haven. Dr. Martin Asis is a Neuroradiologist and practices in Minneapolis.

For five years, father, daughter and son worked seamlessly. They were featured in a New Haven Register Father’s Day article in 1998. Dr. Jose Asis received the Teacher of the Year Award from the Yale residents in 2000. However, in 2002, with great sadness and after thirty three years in practice, Dr. Jose Asis was stricken with stomach cancer and died later that year.

It was with great commitment that Drs Maria and Tony Asis continued their father’s legacy of providing quality and cutting edge medical care to women. Prior to his illness, Dr. Jose was active in recruiting staff to the practice. Toward the end of confirming the practices commitment to excellence of medical care for women, they welcomed Dr. Sean Flaherty to the practice. Dr. Flaherty had already proven himself in residency at Yale New Haven receiving prestigious awards acknowledging his clinical acumen and bedside manner. He continued as an attending, being a valued and awarded teacher of the Yale residents.

When Dr. Flaherty started at Asis Medical in 2002, he was designated to spear head the incorporation of minimally invasive laparoscopy by means of robotic assisted surgery. Soon, the technique became routinely provided by all physicians in the practice, making it the first complete practice in New England to provide this expertise.

The legacy of providing quality, cutting edge care expanded once again with the addition of Dr. Ami Acharya in 2006 to the practice. With a similar drive and vision as that of Dr. Jose Asis, she left her native India to become a more fulfilled physician in the United States. Dr. Acharya received her Masters in Public Health from Harvard University. She completed her residency at Michigan State. There, she ensured herself a full education in obstetrics and gynecology. At the same time, she dedicated herself to developing an expertise in the management and treatment of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. With finely tuned skills, she provides permanent solutions to many of our patients and those referred by other providers. With the addition of Dr. Acharya, Asis Medical Associates has become a comprehensive private practice providing obstetric, gynecologic, and urologic care.

Young women’s first encounter’s with women’s health has been facilitated by the addition of Melissa Longergan, an experienced Nurse Midwife who joined the practice in 2000, and Debra Tashlein, our Nurse Practitioner, who joined in 2006. Each also has lent their expertise in obstetrical support and lactation consultation respectively, rounding out our services to women during their family building times.

Our reputation is based on the bonds we have developed with our patients. Since 1969, we've delivered more than 5000 infants; multiple generations within the same family have been delivered by the practice and continue their care with us.

Lastly, our practice is known not only for our bonds with patients, but also the commitment and warmth of its support staff, many of whom started out as patients of Asis Medical. It is them who share the vision towards the best care possible for our patients and them who take pride in the fact that they are the first voice of our practice. In this era of automated systems and insurance mazes, they answer the phones personally. They are welcoming liaisons between our patients and hospitals, testing centers and insurance companies.

From the beginning of a man with a vision, and an American dream in hand, Asis Medical is proud of its history, tradition, and reputation. We are excited and committed to providing state of the art compassionate care for many generations to come!
